Commonly referred to as a yeast infection, the problem is technically known as candidosis (and even less commonly as moniliasis or oidiomycosis).

The yeasts are very common in people, it's something most people are carrying all the time, however under normal circumstances their growth is restricted by the bodies immune system. Under times of stress, ill-health or a generally weekend immune system this ability to control the growth of the yeasts can be restricted, resulting in a surge of growth and a subsequent yeast infection.

Infections can take place in men, women and children, though the problem is far more common in women and it is in men.

Symptoms of a yeast infection vary depending upon the location of the outbreak, in the vagina or vulva an extreme itching sensation (possibly to the extent of a burning feeling) and a whiteish soft cheese textured discharge is quite common. In men red sores at the head of the penis or foreskin along with a similar itching/burning sensation, though men are less likely to experience any discharge. Equally it can be that there are no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages, which could lead to greater complications in the future. In other parts of the body red sores, and itchiness are common attributes, though these can be for other reasons. While in the mouth you may see creamy white lesions on the tongue or cheeks, though they could be located on any tissue in the mouse. More severely pain while swallowing, or a general feeling something is stuck in the throat

To evaluate if you have an infection or not a medical professional would typically make a visual observation and/or take swabs for a culture growth. However many people will self diagnose a yeast infection and treat it accordingly.

Prevention is of course the best cure, and following good hygiene is a good start. Washing and drying any areas of your body that get wet during the day, and following good oral hygiene procedures. Intimate areas should be washed with products designed for that area and not soap, you will find specific products for men and women available in pharmacies and supermarkets. Following the advice of Linda Allen's 'Yeast Infection No More' is also a worthy practice, as it follows a complete holistic approach to solving the problem.
